THURSDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

AUGUST 2, 2007
THURSDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

EXODUS 40:16-21,34-38
Moses did everything just as the LORD commanded him. So the
tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month in the
second year. When Moses set up the tabernacle, he put the bases in
place, erected the frames, inserted the crossbars and set up the
posts. Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the
covering over the tent, as the LORD commanded him. He took the
Testimony and placed it in the ark, attached the poles to the ark and
put the atonement cover over it. Then he brought the ark into the
tabernacle and hung the shielding curtain and shielded the ark of the
Testimony, as the LORD commanded him. Then the cloud covered the Tent
of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses
could not enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled
upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. In all the
travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the
tabernacle, they would set out; but if the cloud did not lift, they
did not set out--until the day it lifted. So the cloud of the LORD
was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night,
in the sight of all the house of Israel during all their travels.

MATTHEW 13:47-53
"Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down
into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the
fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected
the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. This is how it will
be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the
wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. "Have you
understood all these things?" Jesus asked. "Yes," they replied. He
said to them, "Therefore every teacher of the law who has been
instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house
who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old." When
Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.

REFLECTION
As individuals we all belong to the kingdom. We are a part of the
Church, of a parish, of a community, of a family. Are we worthwhile
members? Are we committed to our communities or are we useless or
obstacles?

The parables of the dragnet and the weeds make it quite clear that
there can be no complete peace in this life. Jesus reminds us that
this is possible only at the judgment. Yet he said: "Blessed are the
peacemakers."

My dear friends, as Christians we are asked to bring more people to a
true commitment to Christ, so that they too can become worthwhile
members and Christians. Have we understood all this? If our answer
is "yes," Jesus says that we should be able to reconcile the old with
the new. We should be able to see that in God's Kingdom everything
of true value has its place. Let us always keep in mind that God's
love extends to everyone in the kingdom. To those who need our help,
he gives the grace to change.
