WEDNESDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

NOVEMBER 7, 2007
WEDNESDAY 31ST WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

ROMANS 13:8-10
Brothers and sisters: Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one
another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The
commandments, You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you
shall not steal; you shall not covet, and whatever other commandment
there may be, are summed up in this saying, namely, You shall love
your neighbor as yourself. Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence,
love is the fulfillment of the law.

LUKE 14:25-33
Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed
them, "If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother,
wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he
cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come
after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a
tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there
is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation
and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should
laugh at him and say, `This one began to build but did not have the
resources to finish.' Or what king marching into battle would not
first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can
successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty
thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will
send a delegation to ask for peace terms. In the same way, everyone
of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my
disciple."

REFLECTION
It costs a lot to follow Jesus. Giving Jesus the first place in our
lives before our family, flesh and blood, friends, career, dreams and
plans is something that is demanded and expected of a disciple of
Jesus. Jesus tells us that we must take up our cross and follow after
him.

The image of building the tower is a good example of what
discipleship involves. We just don't say that we would like to build
a tower or simply begin to build. We have to plan, get materials,
devote hours and hours of work, and, of course, we have to have the
money to pay for the project. We have to be willing to pay the price
of what the building will demand of our time, talents and treasure.

To be Jesus' disciple also demands knowing what it is will cost to be
one and being willing to pay the price. The price is the dying to
what is not of Jesus' kingdom in our hearts and being willing to
follow in Jesus' footsteps, not just occasionally, but day in and day
out. To follow Jesus demands a daily walk with him. It means being
willing to allow Jesus to enter into all the areas of our life,
especially the most personal. Our vocation, family, career, pursuits,
hobbies, talents, everything is a part of the gift that we make to
Jesus. There are no areas in which we prevent him from entering.

Christian discipleship is much more that the saying of prayers or
following of religious practices. It demands that our hearts, our
lives, our very souls are open to Jesus. It means that there is
nothing that is solely belongs to us. Everything belongs to God.

Words are easy and cheap. Being a disciple of Jesus demands so much
more. It demands action. It demands a whole life lived for Jesus,
holding nothing back. It is fine to say that we want to be Jesus'
disciple. It is quite another thing to live and act that way in all
the areas of our lives.

We need to invite the Lord's spirit into our hearts so that we can
follow through and make a reality of that which we say we are, a
disciple of Jesus Christ. As we rely more and more on the Spirit, it
becomes easier to walk hand in hand with Jesus down the difficult
road of life than to just talk about walking with Jesus.
