SATURDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SEPTEMBER 25, 2010
SATURDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

ECCLESIASTES 11:9--12:8
Young man, enjoy yourself while you are young, make the most of the
days of your youth, follow the prompting and desire of heart and eye,
but remember, God will call you to account for everything. 10 Rid your
heart of indignation, keep your body clear of suffering, though youth
and the age of black hair are both futile. Remember your Creator while
you are still young, before the bad days come, before the years come
which, you will say, give you no pleasure; before the sun and the
light grow dim and the moon and stars, before the clouds return after
the rain; the time when your watchmen become shaky, when strong men
are bent double, when the women, one by one, quit grinding, and, as
they look out of the window, find their sight growing dim. When the
street-door is kept shut, when the sound of grinding fades away, when
the first cry of a bird wakes you up, when all the singing has
stopped; when going uphill is an ordeal and you are frightened at
every step you take- yet the almond tree is in flower and the
grasshopper is weighed down and the caper-bush loses its tang; while
you are on the way to your everlasting home and the mourners are
assembling in the street; before the silver thread snaps, or the
golden bowl is cracked, or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, or
the pulley broken at the well-head: the dust returns to the earth from
which it came, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Sheer
futility, Qoheleth says, everything is futile.

LUKE 9:43-45
Everyone was awestruck by the greatness of God. But while everyone was
full of admiration for all he did, he said to his disciples, 'For your
part, you must have these words constantly in mind: The Son of man is
going to be delivered into the power of men.' But they did not
understand what he said; it was hidden from them so that they should
not see the meaning of it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

REFLECTION
Psalm 90 is a beautiful prayer of Moses laying out his heartfelt
feelings about the transience of man's life on earth: "We slide along
the tides of time as swiftly as a racing river and vanish as quietly
as a dream... like grass that is green in the morning and withers
before the evening shadow falls..."

Moses is troubled: "We die beneath your anger, we are overwhelmed by
your wrath". He entreats God to teach us how to spend those numbered
days of our lives as we should. We have to take time to stop for a
while from our daily labors and take stock of what lies ahead for each
of us.

How can we turn away God's anger for sins that lay heavy in our
hearts? We read of the many times in the Biblical past when God's
wrath destroyed the idolatrous with fire, flood and plagues. They are
terrifying tales. Yet are we not ravaged by modern plagues at this
time? By deadly viruses like HIV and H1N1, along with the other
vicissitudes. And is not corruption a plague?

Take heart. We believe God cares and forgives. But we have to do our
bit.

NOW is the time to change, if indeed our lives need changing, before
our number is called. With perseverance we follow the teachings of
Christ as contained in the Gospels. Therein, it is reiterated time and
again that one has to spend one's life loving God and neighbor as
oneself. It is a simple rule. And for those living out this truth, the
end will not be the terror of fire and brimstones but peace and
oneness with God.
