THURSDAY 1ST WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR II

DECEMBER 2, 2010
THURSDAY 1ST WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR II

ISAIAH 26:1-6
That day, this song will be sung in Judah: 'We have a fortress city,
the walls and ramparts provide safety. Open the gates! Let the upright
nation come in, the nation that keeps faith! This is the plan decreed:
you will guarantee peace, the peace entrusted to you. Trust in Yahweh
for ever, for Yahweh is a rock for ever. He has brought low the
dwellers on the heights, the lofty citadel; he lays it low, brings it
to the ground, flings it down in the dust. It will be trodden under
foot, by the feet of the needy, the steps of the weak.'

MATTHEW 7:21, 24-27
'It is not anyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," who will enter the
kingdom of Heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in
heaven. 'Therefore, everyone who listens to these words of mine and
acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on rock.
Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against
that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock. But everyone
who listens to these words of mine and does not act on them will be
like a stupid man who built his house on sand. Rain came down, floods
rose, gales blew and struck that house, and it fell; and what a fall
it had!'

REFLECTION
There is a call to action cited here by Jesus. It's easy enough to let
His teachings enter into one ear and out the other, but what good
would that do? We are called to share His words with everyone so that
all may know them, and learn to be confident to stand on such stable
ground.

We continue to be deluded by an endless stream of advertisements and
infomercials. Perhaps, the items or services offered does deliver on
what is promised. And maybe, the cleaning up of the house, the fuel
and power savings received, and other everyday concerns become a
little bit easier after the purchase and receipt of specified goods.

But, when it comes to our spiritual cleanliness, the only salvation we
can rely on is what Our Lord hands to us. The diligent practice of
prayer, the faithful attendance to church duties and obligations, the
correct rearing up of young children, the generous outpouring of
support for the less fortunate, are just ways of strengthening our
foundation in Him.

Like what we see on TV or hear on the radio, nothing will happen until
we make the effort to pick up the phone or go to the store in order to
get what we need. Until we firmly respond in a concrete manner to
instructions from above, that's the only time when establishing God's
kingdom happens. The land is ready; Jesus invites us to build without
fearing that all our efforts might be washed away by the storms of
indifference and apathy.
