THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

SEPTEMBER 8, 2012
THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
SATURDAY 22ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Mi: 5:1-4a or Rm 8:28-30 / Mt 1:1-16, 18-23 or 1:18-23

ROMANS 8:28-30
We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him, whom he has called ac - cording to his plan. Those whom he knew beforehand, he has also predestined to be like his Son, similar to him, so that he may be the Firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And so, those whom God predestined he called, and those whom he called he makes righteous, and to those whom he makes righteous he will give his Glory.

MATTHEW 1:18-23
This is how Jesus Christ was born: Mary his mother had been given to Joseph in marriage, but before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph, her husband, made plans to divorce her in all secrecy. He was an upright man, and in no way did he want to discredit her. While he was pondering over this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She has conceived by the Holy Spirit, and now she will bear a son. You shall call him `Jesus' for he will save his people from their sins." All this happened in order to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and bear a son, and he will be called Emmanuel, which means: God-with-us.

REFLECTION
The Blessed Mother submitted and surrendered everything in God's hands. She was sure that everything was for a good reason because it was in accordance with God's will. When she gave her "fiat," she put aside all doubts and questions. As a true disciple of God, she forgot who she was and instead focused on what God wanted her to become. She experienced humiliation, shame, hurt and fear, for she was human. However, difficult as it may have been for her, she continued to say "yes" to God's will. During her moments of suffering, she kept everything in her heart.

We need to understand and appreciate the role of the Blessed Mother so that we too, in spite of all our failures and weaknesses, can become true followers of Christ. As one who sincerely loves the Lord, she is our example of humility, love, and loyalty, reminding us that we can triumph over our daily challenges if we choose to do so.

Let us keep the Blessed Mother as our model and inspiration. Let us continue to be encouraged by her to go through each day with faith, hope, and love in our hearts.
