Friday 7TH Week in Ordinary Time
Jas 5: 9-12 / Ps 103: 1-2, 3-4, 8-9, 11-12/ Mk 10: 1-12
Reading: Jas 5: 9-12
Beloved, do not fight among yourselves and you will not be judged. See, the judge is already at the door. Take for yourselves, as an example of patience, the suffering of the prophets who spoke in the Lord's name. See how those who were patient are called blessed. You have heard of the patience of Job and know how the Lord dealt with him in the end. For the Lord is merciful and shows compassion. Above all, my beloved, do not swear either by heaven or by earth, or make a habit of swearing. Let your yes be yes and your no be no, lest you become liable for judgment.
Gospel: Mk 10:1-12
Jesus then left that place and went to the province of Judea, beyond the Jordan River. Once more crowds gathered around him and once more he taught them, as he always did. Some (Pharisees came and) put him to the test with this question, "Is it right for a husband to divorce his wife?" He replied, "What law did Moses give you?" They answered, "Moses allowed us to write a certificate of dismissal in order to divorce." Then Jesus said to them, "Moses wrote this law for you, because you are stubborn. But in the beginning of creation God made them male and female, and because of this, man has to leave father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one body. So they are no longer two but one body. Therefore let no one separate what God has joined." When they were indoors at home, the disciples again asked him about this and he told them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against his wife, and the woman who divorces her husband and marries another also commits adultery."
Reflection:
The institution of the sacrament of marriage is not conceived by man; it is a divine conception. The reply of Christ to this controversial issue on divorce shows us why it is divine. He mentions the words "from the beginning" which means that it was included in God's creation. Man was created in the image of God. That is why he is different from the animals. Human beings share in the divine nature by virtue of grace. We are given intellect, will and authority. Man, being superior cannot find a helper among all animals. It has to be one who is "flesh of his flesh and bone of his bone." God created one for him. Gen.2:24 says, "This is why man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife and they become one flesh." Yet this spousal relationship is not just a physical one because it is still a reflection of another reality, that is, the relationship of God with man.
The prophets, especially in the Song of Songs, show us how God loves Israel as a bridegroom loves his bride, but this bride is an unfaithful one because of her idolatry. Yet God remains faithful. Untiringly, he continues to call her to Him.
Christian marriage is not merely a human contract that can be nullified. While affection between spouses can fade, God's love creates a new relationship. God introduces a mature love that goes beyond the frailties of the couple. God's love is so faithful that even when we sin, He continues to love us. Nothing can separate us from the love of God.
