MONDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time

September 28, 2015 MONDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time
Sts. Lorenzo Ruiz of Manila
and Companions, Martyrs
Memorial, Red

Zec 8:1 – 8 / Lk 9: 46 - 50

[San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila (c. 1600 - 1630), a Filipino layman, and companions were martyred in Japan. He and his companions were beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 1981 in Manila, in the first-ever beatification ceremony held outside Vatican City. He was canonized in Rome in 1987 as the first canonized Filipino saint. At his martyrdom he declared, "I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for the Lord; if I had a thousand lives, all these I would offer to Him."]

Reading: Zec 8:1 – 8
The word of Yahweh, the God of hosts was directed to me in this way, "I am intensely jealous for Zion, stirred by a burning anger for her sake. Yahweh says: I will return to Zion and live in her midst. Jerusalem shall be called City of faithfulness and the Mountain of Yahweh of hosts, the Mountain of holiness."
Yahweh, God of hosts speaks, "Old men and women will again sit in the squares, each with a stick in hand on account of their great age. The squares of the city will be filled with girls and boys playing."
Yahweh, God of hosts declares, "If that seems impossible in the eyes of those who have returned from exile, will it be impossible for me as well?" – word of Yahweh.
Yahweh, God of hosts says, "See, I am going to save my people, bringing them from the east and from the west and they will live in Jerusalem. They will be my people and I shall be their God in truth and in justice."

Gospel:  Lk 9:46 - 50
One day the disciples were arguing about which of them was the most important. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he took a little child and stood him by his side. Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. And listen: the one who is found to be the least among you all, is the one who is the greatest."
Then John spoke up, "Master, we saw someone who drives out demons by calling upon your name, and we tried to forbid him, because he doesn't follow you with us." But Jesus said, "Don't forbid him. He who is not against you is for you."
Reflection:
Our gospel reading today follows key events in our Lord's public ministry: Peter's profession of faith in him as the Messiah of God, his prediction of his suffering, death and resurrection and his transfiguration with Moses and Elijah before the apostles Peter, James and John.
It is in this context that Jesus finds his disciples arguing "about which of them was the greatest." And Jesus educates them in God's value system by bringing in a little child before them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, welcomes the one who sent me. And listen: the one who is found to be the least among you all, is the one who is the greatest."
In God's value system, the least is the greatest. For "fortunate are those who have the spirit of the poor.  . . those who mourn. . . the gentle. . . those who hunger and thirst for . . . those who are persecuted for the cause of justice." (Mt 5: 3 – 10)
The Son of God "emptied himself, taking the nature of a servant, made in human likeness. . . humbled himself by being obedient to death, death on the cross. That is why God exalted him and gave him the Name which outshines all names." (Phil 2: 7 – 9)
The following of Jesus is the following of the humble Suffering Servant, "If you want to follow me, deny yourself take up your cross and follow me." (Mk 8: 34)
