SATURDAY, 16th Week in Ordinary Time

July 29, 2017 – SATURDAY, 16th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Martha, Disciple of the Lord

Memorial, White

Ex 24: 3 - 8 / Lk 10: 38 - 42

Our Lord was a close family friend of St. Martha, her sister Mary and brother Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Ex 24: 3, 7 -8

Moses came and told the people all the words of Yahweh and all his laws. The people replied in one voice: "Everything that Yahweh has said, we shall do."

Moses then took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. They said, "All that Yahweh said we shall do and obey." Moses then took the blood and sprinkled it on the people saying, "Here is the blood of the covenant that Yahweh has made with you in accordance with all these words."

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 10: 38- 42

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he entered a village and a woman called Martha welcomed him to her house. She had a sister named Mary who sat down at the Lord's feet to listen to his words. Martha, meanwhile, was busy with all the serving and finally she said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving?"

But the Lord answered, "Martha, Martha, you are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her."

REFLECTION

Every person has a Martha and a Mary in him/her. Some people are more Martha and some, more Mary. Some active members of the parish are often guilty of allowing the Martha in them to dominate the practice of faith. They are so engrossed with service that they no longer pay attention to readings, homilies, talks and prayers.

In real life, we also tend to get so engrossed with so many things to a point that we neglect the most important things- God and the people around them. Some work so hard to ensure that their family is provided for, but lose their children to drugs and bad company because they are neglected. Relationships are at times sacrificed in the pursuit of worldly things because we spend too much time to ensure success in getting wealthy, often much more than what we really need.

This is Jesus' message to us: "Choose what is better." Spend more time with your loved ones. Spend more time with friends. Spend more time with the Lord. Spend more time praying. Spend more time absorbing knowledge and wisdom.

In the end, excess wealth can potentially do more harm than good, but the relationships and knowledge you have gathered could produce and provide greater positive results in and for you and the people you love.

In the first reading we see the people of Israel confirming before Moses their covenant with Yahweh.
