SATURDAY, 28TH Week in Ordinary Time

October 21, 2017 – SATURDAY, 28TH Week in Ordinary Time

St. Pedro Calungsod, Catechist and Martyr

Bl. Diego Luis de Sanvitores, Priest and Martyr Memorial, Red

Rom 4: 13, 16- 18 / Lk 12: 8- 12

San Pedro Calungsod (1654- 1672), Filipino catechist and missionary to Guam, and Spanish Jesuit missionary Bl. Diego Luis de Sanvitores (1627 -1672), whom Pedro assisted, were martyrs of Guam. San Pedro is the second Filipino canonized saint.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Rom 4: 13, 16

If God promised Abraham, or rather his descendant, that the world would belong to him, this was not because of his obeying the Law, but because he was just and a friend of God through faith ....

For that reason, faith is the way and all is given by grace; and the promises of Abraham are fulfilled for all his descendants, not only for his children according to the Law, but also for all the others who have believed.

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 12: 8- 12

Jesus said, "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before people, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. But the one who denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.

"There will be pardon for the one who criticizes the Son of Man, but there will be no pardon for the one who slanders the Holy Spirit.

"When you are brought before the synagogues, governors and rulers, don't worry about how you will defend yourself or what to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you have to say."

REFLECTION

Our lives as Christians have become more challenging, more complicated and even confused, with the plurality of messages in widespread media. Media in its varying forms is a very powerful tool in communicating messages which are received consciously and even unconsciously. Media can be a great vehicle for good; it can also be a great and effective vehicle to deliver false messages and values.

With the advent of modern technology and modernism, we get easily swayed by pleasure-seeking activities and self-serving culture. It is so easy to choose for comfort and greater convenience. It is so easy to forego Sunday mass and various religious activities because we are so busy with business, professional pursuits and pleasurable activities.

Media can be such a powerful tool for good or for evil. Though we know that morality is not determined by surveys and polls, our behavior can be so easily affected by what others and the world consider worthwhile and important.

In the Gospel reading Jesus tells his audience that witnessing to him and Gospel values could bring many difficulties and opposition, even trials and persecution. He assures us of his continuing support and assistance, "Don't worry about how you will defend yourself or what to say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you have to say."

We pray that we have the courage to stand by Jesus and his values, come what may.
