SATURDAY, 29TH Week in Ordinary Time

October 28, 2017 – SATURDAY, 29TH Week in Ordinary Time

STS. SIMON AND JUDE, Apostles

Feast, Red

Eph 2: 19- 22 / Lk 6: 12- 16

Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles, preached in Mesopotamia where they were martyred. St. Jude is widely venerated as the Patron of Impossible and Desperate Situations.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Eph 2: 19- 20

Now you are no longer strangers or guests, but fellow citizens of the holy people: you are the household of God. You are the house whose foundations are the apostles and prophets, and whose cornerstone is Christ Jesus.

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 6: 12- 16

At this time Jesus went into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them whom he called apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas lscariot, who would be the traitor.

REFLECTION

In the Gospel reading we see Jesus choosing the twelve Apostles. The Apostles were missioned to assist him in proclaiming the Good News. When Matthias was chosen by lot to replace Judas lscariot as an apostle, Peter said, "One of these has to become, with us, a witness to his resurrection." (Acts 1:22) The specific mission of an apostle was to be "a witness to his [Christ's] resurrection."

Like the apostles, each of us has a special mission in our life given by God. Big or small, each one of us has a role in the great scheme of things, in God's plan of salvation. There may be times when God's plan is clear; more usually the real challenge is to know what God calls a person to do.

Though we often associate "vocation" with a special calling to the ministerial Church or to religious life in the Church, vocation really applies to a regular occupation or life at which a person is particularly suited or qualified: in this sense everyone has a vocation in life. Vocation is doing what God has prepared us to do and wants us to do in our life.

Not finding our proper vocation, for what we are most suited for, could lead to an unhappy or unsuccessful life. God wants the best for us, what will make us happy in this life and hopefully in the next. It is up to us to discern what our personal vocation in life is.

Many may be scared and threatened even by just the thought that God may be calling them to something other than what their families or they themselves may have planned or decided on.

We have only one life to lead and a choice or decision removes other choices and possibilities. We pray that we may properly discern our true vocation in life, that we may know God's will for us and that we be one with God in his plan for us.

OTHER INTENTIONS:

For the special intentions of Ma. Angeli Marmeto.

FINALLY, we pray for one another, for those who have asked our prayers and for those who need our prayers the most.

Have a good day!
