WEDNESDAY, 34th Week in Ordinary Time

November 29, 2017 – WEDNESDAY, 34th Week in Ordinary Time

Bl. Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos, Priest Green

Dn 5: 1 - 6, 13- 14, 16 - 17, 23 - 28 / Lk 21: 12- 19

Bl. Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos (1711 - 1735), a young Jesuit priest, was a main apostle of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Spain. He was beatified in Valladolid on 18 April 2010.

FROM THE FIRST READING:          Dn 5: 25- 27

King Darius wrote to the nations, to peoples of every language, "Peace to you all! I decree throughout my kingdom people should reverence and fear the God of Daniel. For he is a living God, and forever he endures; his kingdom will not be crushed, his dominion will never cease. He rescues and he delivers; he performs signs and wonders both in heaven and on earth. And he came to Daniel's rescue saving him from the lions' tooth and claw."

GOSPEL READING:           Lk 21: 12- 19

Jesus said, "Before all this happens, people will lay their hands on you and persecute you; you will be delivered to the Jewish courts and put in prison, and for my sake, you will be brought before kings and governors. This will be your opportunity to bear witness.

"So keep this in mind: do not worry in advance about what to answer, for

I will give you words and wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict.

"You will be betrayed even by parents, and brothers, by relatives and friends, and some of you will be put to death. But even though you are hated by all for my name's sake, not a hair of your head will perish. Through perseverance you will posses your own selves."

REFLECTION

In the first reading we hear King Darius' testimony to the God of Daniel who rescued Daniel from the lions: The living God protects those who believe and place

their trust in him.

In the Gospel reading Jesus warns his followers that they would be persecuted and suffer because of their faith in him. But he assures them of his guidance and protection.

Indeed throughout the two millennia since Christ, beginning with the Holy Innocents and the deacon St. Stephen, many have heroically given their lives in witness to their belief and love of Christ and his Church.

Today we see a lot of violence and persecution in the world. Suicide killers have killed and injured countless others in the name of religion. Wars continue to be waged in the name of God and religion.

Believers of Christ have been persecuted and wronged in many parts of the world at various times and under a variety of circumstances.

Through the example of Daniel before the lions' den and the assurance of Jesus, may we persevere in our Christian faith despite challenges, risks and persecution, "Through perseverance you will possess your own selves."
